This time, formations of up to 16 Spitfires (and Seafires) in the air at once. Eargasm assured.

That is beautiful, so incredibly beautiful.
The engine noise, the formation and the sheer number of aircraft.
It looked some Hurricanes off to the right at the back on the taxi way along with some Sopwith Camels.
It must of been some sight to see on the day.
There is a video or two of them scrambling some where on youtube.

Only two things can top this:
Mass B-17 formation
Mass Ju.87 Dive Run
These are proper aircraft, folks, none of that sissy fly-by-wire, turbine-driven nonsense.
Ironic: I want turbines in my cars but cylinders in my planes.

I'm an air show junkie, though I get to far fewer air shows than I'd like. And I love jets, jets are cool, they're loud, they're sleek. But NOTHING will make me stop what I'm doing and look up like the sound of these old bangers. I'll stand there with drool coming out of my mouth as an A-1 does a show, grin like an idiot when a Bearcat blows by. Here in Texas we get the "Tora Tora Tora" show at just about every air show. It's a Pearl Harbor reenactment, with old T-6s dressed up like Zeros, a B-17 humming around, a C-47 and maybe a Warhawk to round it out. Hearing those radials thrumming away beats the hell out of any go fast they can put up in the sky.

What makes me sad is that there are so few airworthy Axis aircraft left, on account of us winning the war and all. I would love to see 109s and 190s flying around in the sky, since I'm a nerd for those, Nazi affiliations be damned.

Can you imagine what that sound must have meant to people in the occupied areas of Europe? Fear or jubilation, I don't know which.
